SUCCESS
In June of 2006 I ran into my co worker’s husband at my job. We started talking and I found out that he taught piano to elementary school kids and for as long as I could remember I always have wanted to learn. We exchange numbers and by the next month I was learning under him.
I was so excited and wanted to learn all of these different songs and was hoping to become a “professional” within a short amount of time. He told me to do these series of exercises on a daily basis.
For those that understand music, he told me to practice my major and minor scales, blues scales, circle of fifths exercises, chromatics, arpeggios, and a couple of practice riffs everyday for at least 30 minutes. And as you know this can become quite tedious and boring.
Now at first I was really excited because everything was so new to me, but after doing it for months and months, I didn’t really see the point of it. It had gotten real boring and I felt like I was not going anywhere.
By November of that same year, I wanted to learn how to play Vince Guaraldi’s “Linus and Lucy” from the Charlie Brown cartoons. For those who don’t play the piano you have to train your left hand to play one rhythm and your right hand to play a different rhythm. The notes and rhythm in this piece are syncopated which can be a really big challenge and at the same time you have to keep both hands in sync with each other.
I practice just the first part of this piece for about a month and finally got it down. It felt like all blood, sweat, and tears but I finally got it!!!
Since I work in a school district I would practice in the high school choir room. Sometimes the choir teacher would walk in to listen, and he would give me some tips. After he heard me play the first part of Linus and Lucy he gave me a lot of compliments and told me that he could never play Linus and Lucy because of it’s syncopation even though he’s been playing piano for over 40 years.
This was a great shock to me but yet motivational. I figured since he plays piano very, very well, especially in the classics, he would know how to play this song quite well. But like they say, to each his/her own.
Now I can play a variety of genres such as jazz, salsa, blues, R&B and I really thank my piano teacher for telling me to do those simple exercises to get to the point I am today.

Hey Sherman,
I really enjoyed reading this post. Wow, you brought back a lot of musical memories for me with “circle of 5ths”, scales, etc. I gotta admit, I got pretty tired of all this theory stuff too.
Put you’re right. It takes practice, practice, practice to get good at something. I heard that it takes 2 years of persistent practice to just to get good at anything!
Keep it up,
Wayne

So we pretty much see eye to eye on this. As simple as these little exercises are, they mean a lot to become successful whether it’s piano or network marketing. Thanks for your comment Wayne!!

HI Sherman,
wow, now I know that you play the piano. My oldest plays it, so I have always been intrigued by it. It is impressing, absolutely, and your message is clear: Daily consistent action compounded over time lead to the desired success. I always love analogies from other areas of life, learning to play the piano is a pretty good one, thanks for sharing.
Take care
Oliver

I love the piano and just like network/internet marketing it takes a lot of dedication to get to the point where you want to be. Thanks for the comment Oliver!!

Sherman,
Perseverance is one thing for sure and also the mindset to keep your eye on the prize.
To keep looking forward where you will arrive if you keep sticking to the basics amongst other things.
This is a great analogy of the process thanks for sharing.

Hey Sherman,
I think what’s really key here is you are laser focused.
Having that, the prize will magically appear because your emphasis is something so much more powerful.
Have a great day,

Great topic Sherman. I particularly liked the line,
“It’s your daily steps and your daily routine that you have to take in order to reach your goals.”
I think if more people will think back to other non business related achievements they will realize that this is exactly what helped them to success. Then it’s simply a matter of applying the same principles.

You’re absolutely right Marcus. If people would just go back and look at their routines they will see how it helped them to succeed. From learning how to walk up until now. Thanks for your comment Marcus!!
