Has this ever happened to you? You approach someone, build a little rapport, find out what their problem is, expose them and tell them that you’re in network marketing, and they tell you “This is sales and I don’t like selling.”

How many times have you heard something similar to this?

Quite a few huh?

Also you may have exposed someone that’s been in sales and they tell you that they’re tired of doing sales and this opportunity wouldn’t be right for them.

Some people think because they have been in sales that it automatically qualifies them to become successful in network marking.

That’s not always true.

But let me ask you this. Do you know what marketing is, let alone network marketing?

Is there actually a difference?

It most certainly is!!!

It’s surprising but a lot of us involved in this industry do not know this.

As a matter of fact there’s a lot of people that’s been in the industry for over 10 years and still try to “SELL” instead of market.

So what is the difference? Let’s break it down

I’m an IT (Information Technology) guy, and according to the technological viewpoint, networking is a way to connect to workstations and servers in order to exchange information and establish relationships.

According to this industry, it’s a way to connect with people in order to exchange information and establish relationships.

Now for the difference between marketing and selling.

Selling is the act of meeting your customers demands by matching the products and services that you offer. In order to do this a sales person uses the sales concept to persuade or convince the customer to buy.

Marketing, on the other hand, supports the efforts of sales. More listening and two-way communication are involved in marketing. Sometimes they would do surveys in order to figure what customers are looking for and which demographics, cultures, race, etc.. prefer certain products or services.

It includes the following:

1. Figuring out what products or services consumers want
2. Creating a products or services accommodating those wants and needs
3. Pricing those products and services correctly
4. Promoting those products and services, and explaining why the customer should buy
5. The use of “Sales” can be used here at this point, but not in network marketing

So basically marketing is figuring out what your prospect is looking for in order to see what you have matches their wants and needs. If it does then you expose it to them. STOP RIGHT THERE!!! THAT’S MARKETING!!! ANYTHING BEYOND THIS POINT IS SELLING!!

So if you were ever involved in sales and worked for a company, all of the marketing and promotions were already done for you. The marketing portion makes the sales go a lot smoother because the customer already has an idea of what they want when they get to your establishment from all of the advertisements.

What is an Avatar? Here is’s definition

an embodiment or personification, as of a principle, attitude, or view of life.

As you probably already know I dance salsa just about every weekend. The one thing that a lot of people don’t know is that there are about 7 different styles of salsa.

I dance 3 of those styles which are L.A. Style, NY mambo style and Cuban style (which is where I’m strongest in). In order for you to know the difference you have to really be into the salsa scene.

This is where the term Avatar comes in. I got the inspiration from Fred Williams blog post on figuring out the avatar of your customers or target market which is a really great post. Go to his blog called Anatomy Of An Avatar – Who Are You Marketing To?

I first start dancing salsa in 2005 and as time progress my style became more and more Cuban. Part of it is because of the way I naturally dance and the other part of it is because I started hanging around more Cubans and listen to more Cuban music.

So pretty much everywhere I go people would assume that I’m Cuban. As a matter of fact, they will come up to me and start speaking Spanish. So everywhere I go I attract a lot of Spanish speakers, specifically those from the Caribbean.

Although I go to the L.A. salsa clubs where everyone dance L.A. style, I tend stick out because I dance Cuban salsa. This most definitely draws attention and from time to time people would just come up to me and ask if I teach.

Now think about this for a minute. Despite my natural ability to dance, I hung out with Cubans and listen to Cuban music. I started dancing like Cubans so every salsa club I go to they assume that I’m Cuban. I’m American but I also would be considered a “Cuban Avatar” according to the definition.

Now lets take me out of the picture and put you into the picture. What if you want to be this great leader and attract all of these other great leaders and they ask you to teach them how to be a great leader. What do you think you would have to do to get to this level?

Well maybe you need to start hanging around other leaders, read leadership books, listen to audios on leadership, go to webinars on leadership, go to conference on leadership, and when it comes down to it, just live and breathe leadership by becoming its avatar!!

By becoming it’s avatar you’ll start to feel like a leader, speak like a leader, walk like a leader, and the list goes on and on. Once you get that going you will be transformed into a leader. So what are you waiting for? Why are you procrastinating? Do what you have to do to become a leader!

MLM Is About You!!

I know, I know, what does salsa dancing have to do with attraction marketing? I’m glad you asked, and if you didn’t, I’m going to tell you anyways.

If you don’t already know, I go out salsa dancing about 1 or 2 times a week and have the best of time. I even taught classes and did a couple performances, so yes it’s pretty serious.

I had the pleasure of introducing it to some friends and family members, especially when I showed them what I can do on the dance floor.

One of my friends that I introduced it to really took it serious. As a matter of fact, he has won many contests, taught at many places, and performed many of times. He’s also on a salsa/bachata team and done some choreography not only for his team but for other teams as well.

This is all good and gravy, but the year before it wasn’t all that great. As a matter of fact, whenever he would go to the salsa club he wouldn’t even dance most of the time. He would walk into the salsa club with a chip on his shoulder and felt that people there were against him.

If a girl would turn him down he would become bitter about it and not dance the rest of the night. Now this defeats the purpose of going out dancing.

Also the fact that he carried a negative vibe in the club repelled the people that were there to have a good time. Now the question is how did he go from that negative extreme to becoming very popular and successful in the salsa scene?

Here are some quotes I dug up:

Catch my drift?

We talked about this problem over the phone. I suggested that he make some positive changes in his life if he wanted to get the most out of the salsa scene and this would have to start with the negative mentality. The best way to start is:

Change what you see (TV, Books, Magazines, etc.)
Change what you hear (Music, Radio News, etc..)
Change the inner circle of negative friends

It was a slow process but eventually he slowly started to see positive results. By the next year you can see the big change within him which made him more attractive to others. More people started approaching with different offers from teaching to partnering up for a salsa contest and all because of a change in a mental attitude.

People like to be around positive people and as a network marketer this is a key to draw people towards you. You will find that with a positive attitude and making others feel great about themselves you will start to see positive results for yourself. Applying those three things I mentioned to my friend would result in a turning point in your business.

Remember it’s not about luck, it’s about you creating your luck by changing your mental attitude to start with.

When you first get into network marketing you’re taught to expose a certain amount of people a day to your opportunity. You’re taught the 3 foot rule where you talk to anyone that’s 3 feet or less away from you. What a way to force you to come out of your shell, huh? After doing this for a while, you get to wondering if there is a better way to expose people to your opportunity. So you figure you do the lazy man’s approach and start buying leads. But you know what, leads can become costly although you can use them as a write off come tax season. Plus the amount of rejection is horrible. Especially if you haven’t committed yourself to personal development. Only a really good salesperson can do this job, which is pretty much 1% of the nation. Since you don’t sale, and don’t talk to everyone everyday you’re in the streets, what do you do next?

Well you get on the internet to do some research, and you run into this term called attraction marketing. Once you get a little information about it and start talking to all these different people, you get hit up with tool after tool with all the bells and whistles to get 1000 leads a day. Once you purchased a tool from a particular website, then you got to get this other tool with all the training and bells and whistles since it goes hand in hand with the tool that you just bought. This process of buying tools and software to enhance your marketing goes on and on until you’re just about to run out of money. OK, there’s got to be a better and more cost effective way to market you’re business, Right?

Of course there is! There’s all types of free and cost effective ways to market your business. The key is to find way to “massively” do exposures and at the same time not spend too much money. The average person that gets into network marketing do not have a lot of money to spend so whenever you bring someone into your business, make sure you give them ways to market cost effectively. Here are some ways to do so:


This is what you do when you first get into network marketing. The leaders of your organization tell you to talk to 2 or more people about your opportunity. It’s a free way of exposing people to what you have to offer, but it can be a scary thing to go up to strangers and start talking to them. Some people are hardcore about it, while other’s are more conservative.


You can use free classified ad services to market your business. One of the most well known ones is Craigslist. Here you can advertise the products or services you have. Best thing to do to find these free classified ad services is to do a Google search.


There are all types of forums on the internet where you can share tips and ideas on how to grow your business. It’s also a great way to expose your opportunity as well. Network Marketing Forums is not only a great option, but also a lot of them are free.


Since this is a people business, another great way to not only meet people, but also market your business is through social media sites. Sites like Twitter, Facebook, Myspace are great to get into to build relationships with your prospects.


Once you get into social media, another great way is to join a Tribe. This a group of people that help promote each other’s blogs. This is a great way to get indexed in different search engines such as Yahoo, MSN, and Google. So if someone types in Network Marketing Professionals, this is a great way for people to find you in cyberspace.


Do you have any hobbies? Well it’s recommended that you talk to people that are like-minded. One of the most popular websites to get involved in is This is where people with common interests get together to socialize and help each other grow. You may get meetup groups from salsa dancing to entrepreneurship.


Write an article about your products and services and submit it to Ezine for free. Make sure the information is valuable to your readers. This will make you look like an expert in whatever field or business that you’re in.

We all have people in our companies that always make it into the “top recruiters of the month” list. When you ask them how they did it, they always tell you the same thing “build a list of people, build a relationship, provide some value, stay persistant”. You keep doing this over and over again, but you’re not sponsoring anyone. You also have figured out who your target market is, and still to no avail no one wants to join under you. Now how in the heck are these successful network marketers doing it while the rest are struggling to sponsor one prospect?

The answer? Maybe you’re not thinking like a prospect. There’s a lot of people that want to join a network marketing company by far and they’re looking for someone they like and trust to join under. But like so many network marketers, me as well when I first started, we are so quick to expose people to our businesses. Now if you were being prospected and someone was trying to convince you to join their company, doesn’t that sound like selling? How many people do you know that likes to sell? Not too many. What’s worse is that studies show that prospects will only “LISTEN” to 8 percent of what you have to say. Sad huh? Now how can we resolve this problem?

In the “Success In 10 Steps” ebook there is a quiz which was done by the one and only Tom “Big Al” Schreiter who has found a lot of success in network marketing. There is a list of ten items and what you need to do is rate these items yourself, from 1 to 10, most important to least important. This exercise will determine if you’re thinking like your prospects or not.

Your facebook profile is like your own personal resume for prospects to see. Whatever you have on your profile may either attract prospects and it may repel some. I’m going to share what has worked for me and what hasn’t worked.

1. Have an approachable profile picture.

Your profile pic is going to be your prospects first impression of you. You want to have a profile picture that shows your prospect that it would be great to work with you. Have a picture where you have a friendly smile. It could be with a family pic, a picture with your wife, husband, kids, girlfriend, boyfriend, yourself or maybe even your pets. You can have a business suit on or something that’s business casual. You don’t want to have a glamourous picture. Having sagging pants or a T-shirt with profanity on it will more than likely repel your prospects. I have even seen profile pictures
where they have 40 oz beers in their hands with shorts and t-shirts on while promoting a business on facebook. You be the judge of it!

2. Under your info. tab show that you’re down to earth and interesting.

One thing you don’t want to do is only have links to your opportunity. You want to be interesting and show your prospects that you’re a real person. This is a way for your prospects to connect and get to know you. Talk about the music you like, the books you read, the tv shows you like. Why would you want to connect with someone when they’re only about their business. It shows that you don’t have a life and that you’re just trying to sell. 95% of people do not like to sell at all and this can really hurt your business. We’re in network marketing, meaning we’re in the people/building relationship business.

3. Promote “VALUE” not your business.

You want to be able to show your prospects that you’re there to help them and point them in the right direction. By showing them tips and ideas on how to do what you do your prospects will start to build trust in you. This is why a blog is great to promote or any other system that enables you to give value. This is also a great way to get leads.

Be real and have a story about your journey in network marketing or talk about who you would like to meet. Prospects want to connect with real people that can help them and help build their self-confidence.

4. Make sure you don’t have too much information on your profile.

This is pretty straightforward. Facebook has millions of members with millions of profiles. It’s best to keep your profile short and simple just to pique interest.

Everyone wants to be successful at something whether it be in sports, school, or at their jobs. In order for us to become successful we need some type of guidance from someone like a coach, teacher, or a trainer at a job. These are the people that keeps us motivated and points us in the right direction. With these people plus hard work and dedication from our own efforts eventually we reach our goals. We give ourselves a pat on a back and call it a day. The problem is that it doesn’t stop there, especially in the field of network marketing.

The internet has change the network marketing game completely. It’s made it a lot easier to market our opportunities to not only in our local areas, but around the globe, especially with the popularity of social media. The problem is, a lot of us market a little bit too much of our opportunities and not giving enough value to all of the individuals we meet.

Everyone has some type of profile on these social media sites. One good practice is to get to know the person you’re prospecting by reading their profiles. We’re in the people business and one of the things you want to do is attract people to you since you’re the one representing your company. Reading a persons profiles and asking questions about them is a good way to start to attract people. You may find someone that’s interested in an opportunity to work from home or someone that already have a home business and are looking for another one.

Once you start to get to know your prospects, you still don’t want to expose your business to them. Instead, you want to give your prospects some value. Value is important because it builds a lot more trust and faith in you. This is where your blogs come in. Your blogs should contain information about you and techniques to grow a network marketing business.
