Has this ever happened to you? You’ve known someone, let’s say his name is Bob, for some years now. You’ve probably see him maybe once a week, if that. You get along well with him and possibly seen him at different events.

The last event he brought someone over to meet you. He introduces you to this new person and he asks you what was your name! Wait! Stop! Hold on for a minute. You’ve known this guy for a while and he doesn’t know your name. Why is that? How did that make you feel? Not too important huh?

I know there are a lot of people out there that are really bad with names, but if you’re in business, this is not only a bad habit but it can be detrimental to your business. According to Dale Carnegie in “How To Win Friend’s And Influence People” a person’s name is like the sweetest sound to them.

Now have you ever met people who can remember names so easy as if they knew the person that they met for the first time for years and years? In the last blog post I mentioned the spider web effect and how it can benefit your business because of the network of people that you know. Those people that remember names so well are usually successful in whatever they do because of this.

Some people have really great memories, but others, like myself have to use some strategies to remember names. These strategies have work well for me and I like to share some with you.

1. When I first meet people I like to say their names over and over in a conversation –
Example: Nice to meet you John. So John what do you do for a living? Thats a nice suit John,
where did you get it? How long have you been married John.

2. I still introduce people to each other even if I don’t know their names, that way when they
themselves introduce each other, they can say who they are while I’m there listening.
(I know that’s cheating lol)

3. If I’ve known someone for a while and still don’t know their name, I tell them that we need to
connect and if they can write down their name and number on a piece of paper or I’ll ask
them to type in their name and number on my cell phone. (Still cheating, I know lol)

4. When I meet someone for the first time, I would take a mental note by repeating their names
about 10 times.

In all, people like to feel important and just by remembering their names is the first step to building your spider web for success!!
