What’s the worse thing about going to the mall? I mean, think about it, what’s the most irritating thing about walking through a mall?

Well for me it’s being pestered by someone I don’t even know about trying their products and you know who I’m talking about. The one’s that have some products made from ingredients from some far away land or country.

They start out with likes like “Can I ask you a question”, or “I got something I want to show you.”, or “Let me show you something”. And if you agree to go along with them, they ask you a variety of four to five questions to see how they can sell you.

I do have to admit though, I do admire they’re persistence and will power in trying to sell their products. Plus they got the part right about asking questions since selling is the art of solving problems through asking questions and listening.

But the one thing I was trying to figure out is how can they make their approach better in order to pique more interests… hmmm?

Well one strategy I learned from reading sales and marketing books and listening in on trainings is by giving something of value away and not expecting anything in return. Sounds cheesy?

This is a pretty nifty strategy isn’t it? It’s non threatening and the majority of people you market to will not instantaneously put up their defenses. Now Imagine if those same people in the mall use the same strategy. Do you think they will get more sales????

You’re on facebook and you have over one thousand friends. You get on facebook to do your daily routine and someone sends you an instant message.

They ask you a couple of questions (Usually it’s what company are you with, how much money you make, and how many people are in your downline).

Then all of a sudden, out of no where, they attack you with their opportunity!! Yes attack!! They brag about their company, how long its been in business, how much they “plan” on making, their compensation plan, that your way is wrong, they’re way is the best, etc…

All of this bragging and pitching can be a turn off!! So Why is that? What do you think when people approach you like this? If you’ve been in the business for some time you probably would think they were naive. If you haven’t been in business for a while if at all, you probably think they’re just another selfish salesperson.

So what’s really important when you’re prospecting?

Check out this quote by Lisa Kirk:

“A gossip is one who talks to you about others; a bore is one who talks to you about himself; and a brilliant conversationalist is one who talks to you about yourself”

If you want to be great at prospecting, then focus on being a brilliant conversationalist. Ask questions about the prospect themselves and let them talk. You can ask about their hobbies, where they’re from, if they’re married, what they do for a living, etc.. You get the point.

I listen to a CD by Michael Clouse called “Prospecting 101” and he points out that in conversation people tend to be selfish, which is sad to say. They really don’t care about you, they only really care about themselves.

As a matter of fact they may even compliment you by saying that you’re a great conversationalist even though you only said a couple of words. Kinda ironic huh? But it’s true!!!
In all, don’t brag about your companies, don’t brag about your opportunities, because more than likely the people you’re conversing with really don’t care, especially if they’re not looking for an opportunity at all.

Focus on them personally and you’ll be able to build a great relationship one day. Just from this, they may want to join you in any opportunity that you may offer them in the future.

MLM Is About You!!!

A lot of people talk about the do’s and don’ts of network marketing and how they became successful. I like to change it up a bit. I like to focus on my mistakes that I have made in this industry. Hopefully some of you can relate to them.

Mistake #1

I did not go to any trainings or listen to any training calls the first 3 months I was in my home network marketing business!!! I figured that I was just going to apply what I learned from “The Streets” to market my business, and take some advice from people who never been in network marketing, but were always “hustling”. I didn’t need to go to training, or at least to every training to listen to the same thing over and over where in fact I needed to. After I started going to the trainings I started sponsoring people every month. What a coincidence huh?

Mistake #2

I invited people to business meetings and business training calls instead of promoting the speaker of the meetings and training calls!! Since this is a people business, people are attracted to people and you should promote the speaker. Don’t you hate it when you call tech support or customer service and you have to listen to a pre-recorded message that gives you 10 different menus and each menu have 4 different choices you have to make before you can actually talk to a real live person? Sometimes you even get put on hold listening to elevator music before speaking to someone. Oh the agony!!!

Mistake #3

I played cat and mouse with people!! I was chasing family, friends, coworkers, enemies, just anyone that I could possibly sponsor. This is a BIG FAT NO, NO!! Now if they were really interested in what you do, then they would more than likely come to you.

Mistake #4

I didn’t listen or read any personal development CDs or books!!! OK, this is the bulk of your success. You read these books to become a better person. By becoming a better person you become a people magnet.

Mistakes #5

I bought leads!!! OK, getting a bunch of “NO’S” wasn’t the most exciting thing even though I sponsored some people. Those people that I sponsored weren’t that serious. As a matter of fact they were doing mistakes 1,2,3, and 4 to the second degree.

Mistake #6

At times I would try to convince people which really made me desperate. “Ah man, you gotta check this opportunity out. You get paid all these different incomes, and the company been around all these many years, you get all of these different tax benefits, and they offer all of these different types of services, and if you’re really good you can get to the super duper quadruple superized pimped out star spangle banner level where the real money is made. Now how can I call you to tell you more about it?” Ok, I’m done!! This may sound good, but it also repels a lot of people because they feel like you’re trying to sell them and most people do not like that..

Mistake #6a

I convinced people by telling them how successful I am. OK, just because I make such and such amount of money and have such and such amount of people on my team doesn’t mean you’re automatically going to have the same success. It’s not about how successful I am, it’s more about what you do to become successful.

Mistake #7

I didn’t have a strong “WHY”. So many people quit their business because they didn’t have a strong why. I had a weak why because all I wanted to do was to make more money. Well, everyone wants to make more money, and how is that going to keep you running in your business, especially when you have a lot of set backs.

Mistake #8

I just wanted to try it out to see if it works!! Now if it didn’t work in such and such amount of time then I was going to quick. OK, OK, I admit it. I was one of those people that just wasn’t that serious at first if you haven’t noticed already. When I first got into network marketing I thought I would test the waters. Although I had a lot of failures and set backs, I stayed in. The reason I stayed in is because of my Why which I have changed throughout the years.

Mistake #9

Although I was chasing people, I was nervous and quite frankly didn’t know what to say. OK, this is where the trainings and personal development comes in. They really do help, honestly!!

Mistake #10

I had the mentality that this is a numbers game. It’s not about numbers! OK, there was a study about doctors and lawsuits. Usually the doctors who didn’t build relationships with their patients had a bunch of lawsuits over the tiniest things, as oppose to the doctors that built a relationship with their patients. Why is that? Since those patients knew, liked, and trusted their doctors, they were a lot less likely to sue their doctors as opposed to the patients that were indifferent and didn’t know their doctors that well. Same thing applies to network marketing. It’s best to build a relationship to be successful in this industry.

There are more mistakes that I have made which I can not think of right now. With all the mistakes I made, I failed a lot and was very frustrated. But one thing is for sure; I was failing my way to success. Just because you’re failing now doesn’t mean that you’re not going to be successful. Fail forward!!! Learn from your mistakes. There has never been a successful person who didn’t fail their way to the top. So keep failing, keep learning, and keep growing so that you can also be a part of that success circle.

Everyone wants to be successful in something whether it’s good or bad. It could be in sports, politics, school, business, etc. Whatever the case may be there are certain steps you have to take and a certain criteria that you have to meet. A lot of people will either choose to go for the goal, while others will let it slip all away. This is the dividing line between those that are on the road to success and those that aren’t. This brings up a couple of Jeff Olson sayings which are “Successful people will do what unsuccessful people aren’t willing to do” and “It’s easy to do, but it’s also easy not to do”.

When it comes to people and network marketing you meet all types of characters. You meet those that are unsure of themselves, those that are gung-ho about the industry, people who have a lot of fear, and those that just want to test it out. Either way it goes, it boils down to if they are serious about becoming successful in the industry or they’re not. How can you tell? You can tell by their actions.

If you’re someone that do not go to any of the events, listen to any of the training calls, do any exposures, read or listen to any personal development, you have to really question why you even got started. If you don’t have a strong “Why” to keep you in your business then you’re bound to fail.

It’s amazing how people would get started in a home business and rarely do anything if anything at all to become successful. They always find excuses to not become successful. There are a lot of free ebooks to read, free audios to listen to, and there are mentors and coaches that’ll help guide you for free to become successful, but still there are a lot of network marketers that don’t take advantage of these things. They’ll spend years and years of being frustrated and continual failure in their business by doing the same thing that’s barely getting them over or just doesn’t work.

There are a lot of skepticism on who are mentors and coaches. A lot of people want to know how creditable they are by asking them how much money they made, how many people they recruited, and how many people are in their downline. Mentors and coaches are students of the network marketing industry, and if they have been in it for a long time, they will not answer any of these questions. In fact, they won’t even promote their business in a lot of cases. What they will do is provide you with value such as training calls, articles, tools to use, blogs to look at, or ebooks to read. Anything that will help you become successful, they will provide.

You have to become a student of this industry in order to gain some type of momentum to get you going. It usually takes the average person between 2 to 3 years to really get familiar with the industry. Within that time you’re doing a lot of running around, going to trainings, getting on training calls, doing 3-ways, doing exposures, doing what your upline tells you, etc.. As a “baby” network marketer during that time you’re doing whatever it takes to fulfill the criteria in becoming successful in your company whether they have a great marketing system set in place for you or they don’t. Sometimes the company that you’re in doesn’t have the greatest business model and policies and procedures either. But you really don’t pay attention to how your being trained or your company business model, and it’s really not your fault. You’re just learning about the industry and you do what you’ve been taught.

After being in the industry for a while and seeing what doesn’t work, you have the responsibility to explorer new ways of building your business or even find a new business if you’re really serious about becoming successful in this industry. This will in turn show how much of a leader you are, separating you from followers. Leaders will do research, figure out why they fail, learn from their failures, and find answers for themselves. They’re the ones that not only listen to their own companies training’s, but also other’s companies training’s. Leaders concentrate mainly on personal development to make themselves more attractive to prospects which will in turn attract money. With that in mind comes your business success.
